London, UK, December 6, 2019 – OneWeb, whose goal is to connect everyone everywhere, announced #Launchpad, a schools outreach program to inspire students about the importance of bringing connectivity to students everywhere and to get them excited about careers and work in the STEM and Space fields .
#Launchpad's first event will be in the UK with an interactive presentation to participating schools by British Space Scientist, Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock, the OneWeb Schools Ambassador. In addition to the presentation, students will also learn about how satellites are made and how they are launched into Space and the critical role they play in everyday life.
OneWeb, committed to connecting kids everywhere as part of its global reach, has carried out dozens of school visits from Alaska to Australia during 2019. Through this educational program, OneWeb hopes to inspire a new generation of Space leaders and enthusiasts. OneWeb staff will continue to visit schools around the world to speak to children about their work and the New Space Industry, and the impact of connectivity. The program has been created by a team of OneWeb Space experts and will be bought to life with interactive education packs.
Heidi Dillard, Chief HR Officer said, “Giving every child the chance to reach their full potential has been at the heart of OneWeb’s mission from the beginning. Our social purpose is connecting all the many millions of unconnected schools around the world with our network, but more than that – we want to get more kids excited about the countless opportunities of Space, digital communications, and STEM subjects. Our goal is to have the next generation even more connected than the last.”
Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock is committed to inspiring new generations of astronauts, engineers, and scientists and she has spoken to approximately 25,000 children telling them how and why she became a scientist, busting myths about careers, class, and gender.
Dr. Maggie in her role as OneWeb Schools Ambassador, said: “I am delighted to be partnering with OneWeb to inspire school children about the wonders of Space and also the vital use that modern spacecraft have for us here on the ground, such as the role that Low Earth Orbit Satellites can play in connecting the world to the internet. OneWeb is at the leading edge of an exciting resurgence in the Space industry and I’m pleased that they are committed to inspiring young people about the job opportunities in the industry.”
#LaunchPad is designed to engage kids between seven and 14 years of age and can be easily adapted to suit the needs of each school and audience. OneWeb employees will be using the packs to share their expertise and enthusiasm with audiences of young people. The packs will include video introductions and features by OneWeb staff as well as interactive materials including make your own rockets, and paper satellites for children to construct.
